How to Tell If Your Car Needs Paint Correction
Not sure whether your car needs paint correction? Here's how to spot the signs — and what to do about them.
If your car's paint looks dull, hazy, or covered in fine scratches that catch the light at certain angles, paint correction might be exactly what it needs. But how do you know for sure? In this guide, we'll walk you through the most common signs that your car's paintwork needs professional attention — and explain which level of correction is likely to fix it.
What Is Paint Correction?
Paint correction is the process of removing surface defects from your car's paintwork using machine polishers and professional-grade compounds. It works by carefully removing a microscopic layer of clear coat to level out imperfections, leaving a smooth, defect-free surface underneath.
At East Cork Detailing, we offer three levels of machine polishing — Gloss Enhancement, 1-Step Correction, and 2-Step Correction — depending on the condition of your paint.
The Most Common Signs Your Car Needs Paint Correction
1. Swirl Marks That Show Up in Sunlight
Swirl marks are the most common paint defect on everyday cars. They appear as circular, spider-web-like scratches that are most visible in direct sunlight or under artificial light. Most swirl marks are caused by improper washing — automatic car washes, dirty wash mitts, or wiping the car down with a dry cloth.
If your car looks fine in the shade but the paint looks scratched and hazy in bright light, swirl marks are almost certainly the cause. A 1-Step or 2-Step Paint Correction will remove them completely.
2. Dull, Flat-Looking Paint
Paint should have depth and clarity — you should almost be able to see into it. If your car's paint looks flat, chalky, or lacks any real gloss even after a wash, that's oxidation. It's especially common on older vehicles, darker colours, and cars that spend most of their time parked outside.
Oxidation happens when UV rays and environmental exposure break down the clear coat over time. Machine polishing removes the oxidised layer and restores the depth and gloss underneath.
3. Fine Scratches You Can Feel With Your Fingernail
Run a clean fingernail lightly across an area of paint that looks scratched. If your nail catches in the scratch, it's likely too deep for paint correction to fully remove — that's a job for a bodyshop. But if the scratch is so light your nail glides over it without catching, it's in the clear coat only and can be polished out.
The vast majority of scratches on everyday cars are clear coat scratches that paint correction can fix completely.
4. Water Spots That Won't Wash Off
Water spots are caused by minerals left behind when water evaporates on your paint — common in Ireland after rain dries on a warm car. Light water spots can sometimes be removed with a proper decontamination wash, but etched water spots that have bonded into the clear coat require machine polishing to remove properly.
If you've washed your car and the spots are still there, they need paint correction.
5. Paint That Looks Good in Photos But Poor in Person
Modern smartphone cameras have a tendency to smooth out and enhance paint imperfections. If your car looks great in photos but noticeably dull or scratched when you're standing next to it in good light, the paint has surface defects that the camera isn't picking up.
The real test is always in person — ideally under a bright light or in direct sunlight.
6. You're About to Apply Ceramic Coating
This one is less obvious but critically important. Ceramic coating permanently seals whatever is underneath it. If you apply a ceramic coating over swirl marks, scratches, or dull paint, those defects are locked in for the life of the coating — which could be 4 to 6 years.
Every ceramic coating we apply at East Cork Detailing is preceded by machine polishing to ensure the paint is flawless before it's sealed. If you're considering a ceramic coating, getting a paint correction first isn't optional — it's essential.
Which Level of Paint Correction Do You Need?
Not every car needs the same level of work. Here's a simple guide:
Gloss Enhancement Polish — €170
Best for cars with paint that's in reasonable condition but lacks depth and gloss. No major defects — just a boost in clarity and shine. Ideal as preparation before a ceramic coating on a well-maintained vehicle.
1-Step Correction — €300
Best for cars with light swirl marks, minor scratches, and general paint dullness. A single-stage machine polish removes the majority of surface defects while maximising gloss. The most common choice for everyday cars in East Cork.
2-Step Correction — €430
Best for cars with heavier swirl marks, deeper scratches, or more significant oxidation. Two separate polishing stages — the first to cut and remove defects, the second to refine and maximise gloss. The best possible prep before applying a ceramic coating.
What Paint Correction Can't Fix
It's worth being honest about the limits of machine polishing:
Deep scratches that go through the clear coat into the base coat or primer cannot be polished out. These need touch-up paint or bodyshop repair.
Rock chips and stone damage are physical impacts that no amount of polishing will fix.
Heavily faded or peeling paint may be beyond what correction alone can address.

After Paint Correction — Should You Ceramic Coat?
If you're going to the expense of a paint correction, it makes a lot of sense to protect that freshly corrected surface with a ceramic coating. Once the paint is defect-free and polished to its best, a Labocosmetica ceramic coating seals and protects it for up to 6 years — keeping it looking that good with minimal effort.
We offer paint correction and ceramic coating bundles that save you 17% compared to booking both separately. It's the most cost-effective way to get the best result and keep it.
